The Names of the Fields and Areas at Croft

Not long after I began my volunteering as a ‘Ranger’; (I was never too sure about the name, it sounded a bit too American but then maybe it’s better than the original name we had i.e. ‘warden’ a name that prison officers were once called.) anyway, I was given a map to help me orientate myself. Those that had been at Croft for a while knew where ‘West Park’ was or where they were to go to do work in ‘Lady Acre’. With 1400 acres of parkland to range, getting to know your way around is important if, as so often happens, we are sent off in separate groups to undertake work.
I have included the map because I think it is something of an indicator as to what the estate once was. Some of the names are self explanatory but the idea of Lady Acre or Lady Meadow or how Mortgage Field got its name are quite fascinating and perhaps I should do some research to find out a little more.
